What art is? When and why is art art? In his lectures on aesthetics, the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel set the beauty of nature (Naturschöne) against the beauty of art (Kunstschöne). Hegel sees the beauty of art higher than the beauty of nature. As the beauty of art originates from the spirit, be it even above the mere beauty of nature.
Art can use its ability to expand the senses to stimulate people in a very similar way as nature can only do through deception. The human being can imagine things that are not real as if they were real („Der Mensch kann sich Dinge, welche nicht wirklich sind, vorstellen, als wenn sie wirklich wären“ Hegel).
